Watch profiles — merchant guide

Watch profiles leverage native Shopify Custom Data (Metaobjects and Metafields). No external apps, custom database servers, or recurring subscriptions are required.

Editing and linking a watch

  1. Navigate to Content → Metaobjects → Watch profile and edit or create the appropriate entry. Ensure its status is set to Active.
  2. Under Products → [Select Product] → Product metafields → Watch profile, link that entry. The technical namespace is watch.profile.
  3. Save changes. Product cards, PDP technical matrices, comparison drawers, and product stories instantly consume this entry. Wrist Atelier reads case dimensions whenever the product is selected in a sizing block.

An existing direct watch.<field> product metafield takes precedence over the corresponding profile field. An empty direct field gracefully falls back to the profile. Reuse a profile across multiple references only when specifications and craftsmanship narratives genuinely match.

Metaobject schema definition

Metaobject type: watch_profile. Product reference: watch.profile (type metaobject_reference, restricted to Watch profile). Storefront access enabled; entries are translatable. Only the name attribute is mandatory.

Field key Shopify field type / units
name, reference, movement_type, calibreSingle line text
case_material, crystal, water_resistanceSingle line text; water resistance includes verified unit (e.g. 100 m / 10 bar)
power_reserve, frequencySingle line text including actual units (e.g. 70 hours, 28,800 vph)
dial_colour, strap, clasp, weight, warranty, styleSingle line text; weight includes unit
case_diameter, lug_to_lug, case_thickness, lug_widthDecimal number, millimetres; enter raw number only
jewelsInteger
complicationsSingle line text (or list of single line text)
short_descriptionMultiline text
detail_story, movement_story, policy_summaryRich text
wrist_image, detail_image, movement_imageFile reference (images)
detail_hotspotsJSON: array of objects with title, body, x, y (coordinates 0–100; maximum four rendered)

Product card signatures display up to three prominent attributes, prioritising movement type, case diameter, and water resistance, followed by dial colour and strap. PDP and comparison share the full specification resolver. Empty values are omitted rather than displaying dummy placeholders.

Story assets and imagery

Detail stories require both detail_image and detail_story to render. Movement stories require valid text content. Wrist photography is optional; a photograph is an aesthetic reference rather than a guarantee of wrist circumference. Never infer technical facts from arbitrary product photography.

Storefront filters and portability

Collection filtering uses Shopify's native collection.filters. Configuring a profile does not automatically register storefront filters. Activate desired watch metafield filters in your Shopify Search & Discovery or Shopify Filters settings once data is populated.

Profiles are completely optional: merchants can alternatively use direct product metafields. Learn more in the Detailed setup guide.
